Additional Domain(s) : Efficiency
Rationale
This integration indicator captures some of the higher volume conditions identified in emergency departments that could be managed in an alternative non-hospital setting. It is likely that some of the utilization captured here may be entirely appropriate for clinical reasons, or because alternatives, such as family practice options, are not available. It was, however, reasoned that tracking such cases would be important to monitor the impact of clinical alternatives intended to reduce the burden of cases presenting in emergency departments.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • * Determination of (g) tends to elicit much controversy.
  • * This only identifies a problem; it’s not a solution.
  • * This only matters when the alternative PHC services exist.
