Questionnaire Use for Depression Assessment Overall Rank: 40
For individuals affirming one of the two key symptoms of depression (Over the past month, have you been bothered by little interest or pleasure in doing things? By feeling down, depressed or hopeless?), clinicians should consider using a quantitative questionnaire (e.g., Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9)) to further assess whether the patient has sufficient symptoms to warrant a diagnosis of clinical major depression and a full clinical interview.
Diagnosis and initiation of treatment at very early stages of the disease, when little or minimum intervention can bring therapeutic results (e.g., within the first two years of illness).
Additional Domain(s) : Accessibility, Patients with Mood Disorders
Rationale
Some clinicians find that either self administered or professionally administered instruments are useful adjuncts to the clinical interview. Some examples which are recognized and validated are PHQ-9, BECK, HAM-D, QIDS-C and QID-SR. Regardless, it is crucial to document that the patient meets at least 5 symptoms for at least 2 weeks as defined by DSM-IV TR criteria for major depression. One of the symptoms must be depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure.

Summarized CommentsAdd Comment
  • If a client affirmed key symptoms of depression clinicians should do full clinical intervention without need of results of a questionnaire.
